Cabin air filters should be replaced regularly as part of your routine car maintenance schedule. Delaying or failing to change your cabin filters will greatly impair the efficiency of car air-conditioning, as well as affect the quality of air inside the vehicle.
Function of cabin filters
These high particulate filters are fitted to the air intakes of car air-conditioning and heating systems. They may be made from a range of materials, but all are designed to remove airborne particles such as dust, pollen and other allergens from the environment, ensuring that the air circulating inside the cabin is clean and free from pollutants.
The dangers of dirty filters
If you do not clean or change your cabin air filters as often as is recommended, your car’s climate control systems will need to work harder and therefore consume more energy to deliver the same cooling and heating performance. This can put a greater strain on the engine and cause components in the system to wear out more quickly.
In severe cases, the function of air conditioners and heaters can be impaired, leading to fluctuating or insufficient temperatures inside the cabin. Dirty filters can also put the health of drivers and passengers at risk, especially people with allergies.
How often should you replace the cabin filter?
There are no hard and fast rules on when to change your cabin filters. It’s recommended to clean the filters each month and have them replaced at least once a year or every 20,000 kilometres whichever comes first. If you routinely drive in areas with higher levels of pollution and other contaminants in the air, the cabin filter will need to work harder and should be replaced every six months or 10,000 km.
